Windows 11 Pro vs. Home: Which License Do You Actually Need?

Published January 5, 2026

Windows 11 Home and Pro run the same interface and support the same apps, so the difference is easy to underestimate — until you hit a feature that's Pro-only and realize an upgrade key costs more than just buying Pro up front.

What Home covers

Windows 11 Home is the right call for a personal laptop or family desktop: full app compatibility, Windows Hello, and standard security features. It supports up to 128GB of RAM, which covers the overwhelming majority of consumer hardware built in the last few years.

What only Pro unlocks

Windows 11 Pro adds BitLocker full-disk encryption (Home only gets "device encryption," which is more limited), Remote Desktop as a host (Home can only connect out, not accept incoming connections), Hyper-V for running virtual machines natively, and the ability to join an Active Directory or Azure AD domain. If you work from home and IT needs your machine on the company domain, or you run VMs for testing, Pro isn't optional.

RAM and BitLocker matter more than people think

Pro supports up to 2TB of RAM versus Home's 128GB ceiling — irrelevant for most people, but relevant if you're running a workstation for video editing or local AI model inference. And BitLocker is the feature freelancers and remote workers underestimate: if your laptop is stolen, Home's weaker encryption is a real gap versus Pro's full-volume protection.

Coming from Windows 10?

The same Home/Pro split exists on Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home if you're on older hardware that doesn't meet Windows 11's TPM 2.0 requirement. The feature gap is essentially identical across both versions, so the decision logic doesn't change based on which generation you're buying.

Upgrading later costs more than buying right the first time

Microsoft does sell a Home-to-Pro upgrade key, but it's consistently priced higher than the gap between buying Home and Pro outright from the start. If there's any realistic chance you'll need Pro's features within the machine's lifetime — a new remote job, starting to run VMs for a side project — it's cheaper to buy Pro up front than to pay for Home now and the upgrade path later.

Hardware requirements are identical between the two editions — Pro doesn't demand a more powerful machine, it simply unlocks software-level features on the same minimum specification. So the decision genuinely comes down to which features you need, not what your current hardware can support.

Retail versus OEM licensing is a separate axis from Home versus Pro — a retail license can be transferred to a new PC later, while an OEM license is generally tied to the original machine, worth checking before buying if you expect to upgrade hardware within the license's useful life.

Quick FAQ

Is Windows 11 Pro faster than Home? No. The two editions have the same core performance on identical hardware; Pro mainly adds business, security, virtualization, and management features.

Do I need Pro for a normal home PC? Usually not. Home is sufficient for typical personal use unless you specifically need features such as BitLocker, Hyper-V, domain joining, or Remote Desktop hosting.

Can I upgrade from Home to Pro later? Yes. A Home installation can be upgraded to Pro, but buying the edition you expect to need from the beginning can be more cost-effective.

The simple rule

Buy Home if the machine is purely personal and never touches a company network or VM workload. Buy Pro if any of the following apply: you connect to a work domain, you need Remote Desktop hosting, you run VMs, or you want BitLocker's full protection.
