Steam vs. Epic Games Store Keys: Which Should You Buy in 2026?

Published January 1, 2026

Most AAA releases ship with a key for both Steam and Epic Games Store, and the two keys usually cost about the same. So the real question isn't "which is cheaper" — it's which platform actually fits how you play. Here's a practical breakdown before you check out.

Library and account lock-in

A Steam key permanently attaches the game to your Steam library, and Valve's Family Sharing lets you lend that library to people on your network. Epic keys attach to your Epic account, which has grown its own set of perks (a free game every week, Epic Rewards on some purchases) but a smaller social layer — no in-game overlay stats, no trading cards, no Steam Workshop integration. If you already have years of games and friends on one platform, that's usually the deciding factor, not the key price itself.

Mods, Workshop, and community tools

For heavily modded titles like The Witcher 3 or Elden Ring, Steam Workshop integration is a real advantage — one-click mod installs versus manually dropping files into a folder on Epic. If mods are part of your routine, buy the Steam key even if the Epic key is marginally cheaper.

Where Epic pulls ahead

Epic takes a smaller revenue cut from publishers, which is part of why exclusivity deals exist, and it has genuinely improved cross-progression support for live-service titles. For games like Valorant or games built around Epic Online Services, an Epic key is the more native experience with fewer sync quirks. Epic's refund window (14 days, under 2 hours played) also mirrors Steam's policy almost exactly, so returns aren't a differentiator either way.

What doesn't change: activation and delivery

Regardless of platform, a legitimate key from a reseller activates the same way — you redeem it directly inside the Steam or Epic client. There's no region trick or workaround needed for global keys; you're just choosing which client the game lives in. Browse the full Game Keys catalog and check the platform field on each listing before you buy — most popular titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, are sold with both options.

Refund policies are nearly identical

Both platforms allow refunds within 14 days of purchase provided you've played under 2 hours, which removes "what if I don't like it" as a reason to favor one platform over the other. Where they diverge is post-refund-window support: Steam's community-driven troubleshooting (forums, guides tied directly to each game's store page) tends to surface fixes for older titles faster than Epic's smaller community layer, which matters if you're buying something like Far Cry Series years after release and hit a compatibility issue.

One more practical note: achievements and playtime tracking are handled entirely within each platform's own client, so switching platforms on a sequel later means starting a fresh achievement list rather than carrying progress over — a minor factor, but one completionists should keep in mind before locking into one storefront for an entire franchise.

The short version

Pick Steam if you value mods, an existing friends list, or Workshop content. Pick Epic if the game is built around Epic Online Services, you want the free weekly game habit, or the specific edition you want is cheaper there. Either way, the actual game — patches, DLC eligibility, achievements — is identical.
