Shared Hosting vs. VPS vs. Dedicated Server: What Does Your Site Actually Need?

Published January 21, 2026

Hosting tiers are usually explained in technical terms (RAM, cores, isolation) without saying what traffic level actually justifies the upgrade. Here's the practical version.

Shared hosting: fine until it isn't

Shared Hosting Plans put your site on a server alongside many others, splitting resources. For a blog, small business site, or portfolio under roughly a few thousand visits a month, this is genuinely enough — the bottleneck people hit isn't raw traffic, it's a slow database query or plugin bloat that shared hosting's shared resources make more visible under load.

VPS: your own slice, guaranteed

VPS Hosting gives you a virtualized slice of a physical server with resources reserved for you alone — no noisy-neighbor slowdown from other sites on the same box. This is the right upgrade point once a site outgrows shared hosting's shared-resource limits, or when you need root access to install specific software shared hosting doesn't allow.

Dedicated servers: full hardware, full control

A Dedicated Server gives you an entire physical machine. This is overkill for the vast majority of websites — it's the right call for high-traffic e-commerce, applications with heavy compute needs (video processing, large databases), or compliance requirements that specifically mandate non-virtualized hardware.

Don't forget the layer above hosting

Regardless of which tier you pick, a Cloudflare Pro/Business plan sitting in front of your hosting adds CDN caching and DDoS protection that meaningfully reduces the load your actual server has to handle — often letting a smaller hosting tier perform like a larger one.

Managed vs. unmanaged makes a bigger difference than the tier itself

Within any of these three tiers, whether the hosting is managed (the provider handles server maintenance, security patches, and backups) or unmanaged (you're responsible for all of it) matters as much as the tier itself. A managed VPS is often a better fit for a small team without dedicated ops staff than an unmanaged dedicated server, even though the dedicated server has more raw resources on paper.

Backup frequency and retention policy is worth confirming at whichever tier you choose — some hosting plans include only weekly backups by default, which may not be sufficient if your site takes frequent orders or updates, in which case a more frequent backup add-on is worth the extra cost regardless of hosting tier.

Migration support between tiers is worth asking about directly — a good host will help move your site from shared to VPS with minimal downtime, and confirming this support exists ahead of time saves a stressful manual migration later if you do need to upgrade.

Uptime guarantees (typically expressed as a percentage like 99.9%) are worth comparing across providers at whatever tier you choose, along with what compensation, if any, the provider offers if that guarantee isn't met during a given billing period.

The decision in one line

Start on shared hosting unless you already know you need root access. Move to VPS when shared hosting's shared resources become the bottleneck. Only go dedicated when you have a specific compliance or extreme-traffic reason to. See all tiers in Domains & Hosting.
