Mainstream cloud storage from Google, Apple, and Microsoft is convenient but generally doesn't offer true end-to-end (zero-knowledge) encryption by default — these four are built specifically around the idea that the provider itself shouldn't be able to read your files, worth understanding the real differences between them.
Mega.nz: generous free storage with end-to-end encryption built in
A Mega.nz Premium subscription is notable for offering substantially more free storage than most competitors before you even pay, alongside end-to-end encryption as a core feature rather than a paid add-on. It's based in New Zealand, which shapes its jurisdiction-related privacy posture differently from US-based providers.
Sync.com: Canadian jurisdiction with strong zero-knowledge design
A Sync.com Subscription is built around zero-knowledge encryption from the ground up, with the added benefit of Canadian data protection law, which some users specifically prefer over US jurisdiction for privacy-sensitive files. Its interface is generally considered more polished and mainstream-friendly than some competitors in this more privacy-focused category.
pCloud: a distinctive lifetime payment option
A pCloud Premium subscription is unusual in this category for offering a genuine one-time lifetime payment option alongside standard recurring subscriptions — worth strongly considering if you want to avoid an ongoing monthly cost indefinitely, though note that pCloud's zero-knowledge encryption specifically is typically a separate paid add-on rather than a default included feature.
Proton Drive: the natural pairing with Proton's other privacy tools
Proton Drive Premium is the strongest pick if you're already using or considering Proton Mail, since Proton Drive is built to work as part of the same privacy-focused ecosystem — one account, consistent encryption philosophy, and bundled pricing across mail, drive, and other Proton services rather than juggling separate providers.
Zero-knowledge encryption means the provider genuinely can't help you recover a lost password
This is the tradeoff worth understanding clearly before switching to any of these — because these providers can't read your encrypted files, they also can't reset a forgotten password the way a mainstream provider like Google can. Losing your password on a true zero-knowledge service typically means permanently losing access to your files, so back up your password or recovery phrase somewhere secure and separate.
File sharing and collaboration are more limited than mainstream tools
Because encryption adds complexity to real-time collaboration, none of these four match Google Drive or Dropbox's collaborative editing smoothness — they're built primarily for secure storage and sharing rather than live multi-person document editing, worth knowing if collaboration is as important to you as privacy.
File size limits and upload speed vary by provider and plan
If you regularly work with very large files (video projects, large datasets), check each provider's individual file size limit and typical upload speed at your specific plan tier — some privacy-focused providers impose stricter per-file limits than mainstream cloud storage, worth confirming before committing to a large-file-heavy workflow.
