Bitcoin vs. Ethereum vs. Multi-Crypto Gift Cards: What's the Difference?

Published February 2, 2026

Crypto gift cards are a straightforward way to give someone exposure to crypto without them needing an exchange account first — but the three main variants work slightly differently at redemption.

Bitcoin Gift Card: single-asset, simplest to explain

A Bitcoin Gift Card redeems directly into BTC at the recipient's wallet of choice. It's the easiest option to explain to someone new to crypto — one asset, no decision to make at redemption — which makes it the better gift for a true beginner.

Ethereum Gift Card: for recipients already in the ecosystem

An Ethereum Gift Card makes more sense for someone already active in DeFi, NFTs, or Web3 apps, since ETH is the base currency for gas fees across most of that ecosystem — a more useful gift for an existing user than a newcomer.

Multi-crypto and stablecoin gift cards: flexibility at redemption

A Multi-crypto Gift Card lets the recipient choose which asset to redeem into at the time of redemption rather than committing you to pick one on their behalf — the safer choice if you don't know their existing holdings or risk tolerance. For recipients who'd rather avoid price volatility altogether, a USDT/USDC Gift Card redeems into a dollar-pegged stablecoin instead of a volatile asset.

What redemption actually requires

All variants require the recipient to have (or create) a compatible wallet or exchange account to receive the funds — the gift card itself is a code, not a physical asset, so there's no wallet setup needed on the buyer's end, only the recipient's.

Network fees affect small redemptions more

Redeeming any of these cards into a wallet involves an on-chain transaction, which carries a network fee that's roughly fixed regardless of the amount being sent — this matters proportionally more for smaller gift card denominations, so for very small amounts it's worth confirming the redemption network fee before assuming the full balance lands untouched in the recipient's wallet.

Price volatility is a real consideration specifically for BTC and ETH gift cards — the dollar value of the redeemed asset can move meaningfully between the moment the card is bought and the moment it's redeemed, which is exactly the risk a stablecoin voucher is designed to avoid for anyone who'd rather not think about timing.

Minimum redemption amounts sometimes apply depending on the receiving wallet or exchange's own policies, separate from the gift card's face value — worth checking the destination wallet's minimum before redeeming a very small denomination card to avoid an unexpected shortfall after fees.

Cold storage (moving redeemed crypto to a hardware wallet rather than leaving it on an exchange) is worth considering for larger amounts specifically, since funds held on an exchange remain exposed to that exchange's own security, separate from the gift card redemption process itself.

Transaction confirmation times before funds are fully available differ by network — Bitcoin transactions generally take longer to confirm than Ethereum's, worth factoring in if you need the funds usable immediately after redemption.

Which to buy

New to crypto: Bitcoin. Already active in Web3/DeFi: Ethereum. Not sure, or want to avoid picking for them: Multi-crypto or a stablecoin card. All variants are in Crypto & Wallet Top-ups.
